In August of 2007 I embarked for Guatemala with a team of extreme followers of God, people willing to make many sacrifices to spread the Gospel of Christ.  Our task was to distribute translated Bible stories on cassette tapes to the rural Pokomchi Indians.  These people number roughly 100,000 and currently their is only one missionary (as recognized by the IMB and its affiliates) sharing the Word of God with them.

Our journey would take us to 4 towns and would require us to distribute hundreds of cassettes. The work involved in tape distribution consists of packing backpacks to the brim with tapes and hiking up and down mountains, and through the jungle, until they can all be given out to families.  We repeat this until everyone has a tape or we run out of tapes, whichever happens first . . . though it was rare that one of us could be found without a spare tape to give away. I wouldn’t fully grasp how pertinent the work we were doing is to the needs of the Pokomchi until our trip came to its end.On one of the last days we spent in Guatemala, my team was taken on a little exposure tour of Guatemalan culture.  This was my first realization of the effects of something called syncretism.  Syncretism is the parallel implications of two or more belief systems creating a new set of beliefs that is a type of compromise between the different systems.  In this case, indigenous mysticism mixed with Catholicism.  Allow me to expound . . .
